SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION

Living Walls and the Future

Students are creating vertical gardens to action their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint by applying their knowledge of sustainable design. After presenting their garden proposals to an expert panel, discussing design aspects, cost analysis, sustainable material selection, the installment process, maintenance requirements, design aesthetics and long-term benefits, four designs were chosen. Students incorporated community outreach ideas into their design through their consideration of the well-being benefits of gardening as well as the possible partnership opportunities in sharing produce (i.e. herbs, vegetables) from the gardens. Students are always encouraged to reach out to industry professionals to examine design ideas and to reflect on the ongoing collaboration between ISL and the wider community.
